New Orleans, LA—The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) hosts a Recruitment Day for students in the Division of Natural Sciences at Dillard University on Wednesday, October 27 in Stern Hall, located on the University’s campus. Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and last through 2:30 p.m.
UNMC Recruitment Day includes a presentation on health disparities by faculty and staff of the Medical Center, a seminar, and student recruitment and breakout sessions.
In 2001, Dillard University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center entered into an affiliation agreement to help undergraduates at the historically black university prepare themselves for a future in the health sciences.
The Dillard-UNMC affiliation provides a multitude of academic and research opportunities for minority undergraduate students and faculty, including summer research internships for students under the guidance of UNMC faculty, staff and students; faculty exchanges; seminars and presentations; and collaborative grant applications.
Since the affiliation’s inception, more than 11 Dillard University students have received internships from UNMC. Kimberly Bernard, a senior biology major from Houston, TX has been accepted to enter the UNMC School of Pharmacy in August 2005.
In addition to the partnership with Dillard, UNMC’s first formal affiliation with a historically black institution, UNMC also has academic affiliation agreements with Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia; Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado; and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Agreements are being negotiated with Morehouse College and Spelman College, both in Atlanta, Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., and Tennessee State University in Memphis. In the past three years, UNMC has provided summer research experience for 40 minority undergraduate students, including 26 from HBCUs.
